The Good and Bad from the Bengals Week 6 Win Over the Lions

The Bengals were coming off a tough loss to the Packers, a game they had multiple chances to win. A week later, they were facing a much weaker Lions team, with the expectation that they should win this one handedly. Well, the Bengals did just that. While there were some kinks that can be learned from and improved upon, the team, for the most part handled things well. Let’s look at both sides.

The Good:

– RB, Chris Evans

With Samaje Perine out, Chris Evans had his first real chance to take hold of the RB2/passing back role. While his role going forward has yet to be determined, he did all he could on Sunday to solidify his place.

Well known for his receiving in college, Evans was used in this capacity and excelled. He lined up against a LB and created a ton of separation which allowed Burrow to find him along the sideline for a deep TD. On the day, he totaled 3 receptions for 49 yards and 1 TD, while also rushing for 18 yards on 4 carries.

As good as his play with the ball was, Evans also excelled in pass protection, something he also excelled at in college. Considering both Perine and Mixon have had their issues in this area so far, pass protection may be Evans’ golden ticket to more playing time. It is early in his career, but he is already shaping up to be the next Gio Bernard.

– RB, Joe Mixon

Evans was the shiny new toy on offence, but not to be outdone, Mixon had himself a day as well. His usage in the passing game was finally increased, and this increase in usage paid off. His 5 receptions led the team, while his 59 receiving yards were second behind Chase. Mixon also added a receiving TD, in the form of a 40 yard catch and run on 4th & short, as well as 94 rushing yards on 18 attempts.

– WR, Ja’Marr Chase

Ja’Marr Chase continued his stellar rookie season with yet another good performance. While his reception totals haven’t been super high, he has been insanely efficient. On Sunday, he produced 97 yards on only 4 receptions. He hauled in two deep passes, including a 53 yarder.

– The entire defence

It would take too long for me to shout out every defensive player individually, but really, they all deserve it. The defence held a good RB in D’Andre Swift to only 24 yards and an average of 1.8 yards per carry. The only person who could get anything going on that Lions offence was TJ Hockenson.

Logan Wilson had another good game, picking up his 4th interception of the season, which puts him in the 2nd spot among the league’s interception leaders. Trey Hendrickson consistently had his way when matched up against Penei Sewell. Chidobe Awuzie was lock down in coverage and Vonn Bell racked up the tackles.

The Bad:

– The 1st half offence

The offence scored on their opening drive of the game, but looked anemic for the majority of the 1st half afterwards. It wasn’t until the final drive of the half when the Bengals put up their next points, which came through an Evan McPherson field goal.

– PR, Darius Phillips

Phillips has had his share of exciting plays since being drafted. However, he hasn’t been able to find that magic so far this season. After another lousy return, the team decided to let Trenton Irwin return the punts for the rest of the game. Phillip’s hold on the spot seems to be slipping.
