For day 7 of training camp, the Bengals were in the indoor facility. Amarius Mims and Cam Taylor-Britt both had the day off, as we see some load management. According to James Rapien, Mims has been seen with a wrap on his right wrist over the past few days. Trey Hendrickson continued his hold-in, and was in street clothes. He was seen helping out Shemar Steward with some technical stuff.
The major story of the day was DJ Turner’s performance. Easily the most impressive Bengal during the 7th session, and it might have been the best individual performance of training camp so far.
Turner had around 5 pass breakups, all of which were done in tightly contested situations. On one, he matched up against Andrei Iosivas, who has a big size advantage, and elevated to match his high point. Then on the next play, he won the battle against Tee Higgins. To seemingly top himself once again, Turner then was sticky in coverage against Ja’Marr Chase, allowing no separation before reaching over to make another nice pass breakup. Later, Turner beat Higgins once again. Taylor-Britt and Hill seem to be locked into the top 2 spots, and we know the team likes Newton. But Turner, with a performance like this, is making his case to stay in the top 3.
Speaking of Daxton Hill, he was able to snag Burrow’s second interception of camp. Demetrious Knight deflected the pass over the middle, which was intended for Chase. It landed right in the arms of Hill. Then, sticking with the defensive theme here, Jordan Battle continued his strong camp with some tight coverage on Jermaine Burton, which led to an incompletion.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the offence, as much as it might seem like it. Burrow did find Tee Higgins down the field on some plays, including one where he beat Jalen Davis. Burrow also hit Iosivas on a dice arching pass down the sideline.
As for the offensive line, the story seems to be the same. Fairchild has flashed, but after a win against Ossai, he gets beat for a sack right after. The OT’s are good with Mims and Brown, but the interior is definitely looking shaky. We’ll see if the Bengals make a move, after adding Noah Fant today.
