The Bengals have made a couple of moves on Tuesday, placing RB Zack Moss on the active/NFI list and waiving DT Dante Barnett.

With Moss, it is interesting that they placed him on the NFI list. There has been speculation that perhaps he isn’t quite over his neck injury. But NFI stands for non-football injury, and this usually pertains to injuries that occur outside of the NFL.

It is unknown at this time if it is related to his neck injury or if this is something new. In any event, Moss is eligible to be activated at any point during camp. If he remains on the NFI list into the regular season, he’ll be forced to miss a minimum of 4 games.

Barnett, meanwhile, is an undrafted rookie. From Birmingham, England, he joined the Bengals through the International Player Pathway program.

His release is a bit puzzling. As per the rules of the international program, he did not count against the 90 man roster, nor would he have counted towards the practice squad roster limit. The only way he would have counted was if he made the 53 man roster, which wasn’t going to happen.

Perhaps the Bengals had seen enough during OTA’s to figure they were better off not handing out a salary to a developmental project that they didn’t see much upside in. But even still, with the free roster spot, you would have expected him to at least get a look in camp when the pads come on.
