The Bengals have agreed to terms with RB Samaje Perine on a 2 year deal worth up to $3.8M.

It is a reunion for the two sides. Perine first joined the Bengals in 2019, bouncing between the roster and practice squad. In 2021, his role was elevated, as he became the RB2 behind Joe Mixon. His ability in pass protections, as well as his hard running style, earned him some praise. His long TD reception against the Chiefs in the 2021 AFC Championship was what sparked their comeback.

Perine continued in his role in 2022, but was priced out of Cincinnati that offseason. The Broncos gave him a nice deal in free agency, but in a crowded backfield, he didn’t have as big a role. This past season, Perine won an AFC Championship with the Chiefs. He had a minor role in their passing attack, but again, was in a crowded backfield.

Now back in Cincinnati, there is a good chance that Perine will reprise his role as RB2, this time behind Chase Brown. Perine’s main focus these days has been in the passing game, and his ability in protection should continue to earn him some snaps.

This deal could potentially spell the end of Khalil Herbert’s short tenure in Cincy. Back on trade deadline day, the Bengals gave up a 7th round pick to acquire him, but with Perine in the fold, the Bengals may opt to add another RB in the draft, as well as some UDFA’s or similar level free agents. But this is all speculation at this time. In the coming days and weeks, we’ll see how the Bengals continue to add to the position, as they fill out the depth chart.
