With Sheldon Rankins and BJ Hill both exiting last weekend’s game with hamstring injuries, the Bengals decided to make some moves to address the ongoing issue that has been the interior defensive line.
On Tuesday, they signed 34 year old veteran Lawrence Guy. This comes after the team hosted him for a workout.
Guy was originally a 7th round pick of the Packers in 2011, and spent time with the Colts, Chargers, Ravens, and Patriots, in addition to the Packers. Over the course of his career, he has racked up 507 tackles, 39 for a loss, 17 sacks, 9 pass deflections, 2 forced fumbles, and 6 fumble recoveries.
The veteran had spent the past 7 seasons with the Patriots, but experienced a down year in 2023. This resulted in his ongoing availability into the regular season. At this point, it is hard to say how much he can really add, but the Bengals are in need of depth, and Guy can add that.
To make room, the Bengals waived DE KJ Henry.
Henry was claimed off waivers from the Commanders after final cuts. He played a rotational role in the first two games, but did not seem to make a big impact. With the team’s need for interior depth, someone else had to be let go to make room. With Myles Murphy hopefully coming back in a few weeks, Henry might have been waived at some point down the line, if not now.
The Bengals also released WR Shedrick Jackson from the practice squad. The speedy receiver spent last year on the practice squad, being elevated for three games. They did not immediately fill the void, so perhaps they are waiting to see if Henry clears waivers, with the intention of giving him the open spot.
UPDATE – 9/20/2024: KJ Henry has been signed to the practice squad.
