The Bengals have placed DE Jeffrey Gunter on the reserve/retired list.

This one comes out of left field. He was challenging for a roster spot, and had looked solid in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Buccaneers.

Gunter was a 2022 7th round pick of the Bengals, originally. Funny enough, he is the team’s second 7th round pick in recent memory to retire early in his career, joining Wyatt Hubert. Hubert, of course, attempted a comeback, but was released.

This announcement also marks another second, as he is another body lost at the DE position. Earlier on, Cam Sample went down with an Achilles injury during a training camp practice.

The Bengals could opt to make another addition, but they did already add a few camp bodies once Sample was lost. At this point, rookie Cedric Johnson is the favourite to win the last DE spot.
