Bengals 2024 Training Camp Preview: Special Teams

Bengals Training Camp Preview: Special Teams

Players:

2. Evan McPherson (K)

7. Austin McNamara (P)

10. Brad Robbins (P)

48. Cal Adomitis (LS)

Evan McPherson has developed into one of the league’s best kickers since being drafted. The Bengals do not have another kicker on the roster and there is no question as to what is going on here. McPherson is the guy, needless to say.

Things will be a bit different at punter this offseason. The Bengals will be conducting a positional battle. Brad Robbins is the incumbent, while Austin McNamara will look to supplant him as an undrafted free agent.

Robbins was a rookie draft pick last year, but the Bengals overemphasis on directional punting may have clouded their judgement when it came to his leg strength. To put it lightly, Robbins doesn’t exactly have a booming leg.

McNamara, on the other hand, does. But on the flip side, he has some other stuff to work on, with the main thing being to eliminate occasions of outkicking his coverage. From a talent standpoint, McNamara has the advantage. We’ll see if he can parlay that into a roster spot.

The long snapper situation is similar to the one at kicker. Cal Adomitis is the only one on the roster, and has held down the job since taking over for Clark Harris early in 2022. He will be the guy.
