According to reports, the Tennessee Titans are set to hire Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan to be their new head coach.
Callahan first joined the Bengals in 2019 as their offensive coordinator, shortly after Zac Taylor had been hired by the team. While he hasn’t called the plays in Cincinnati, Callahan has been a major part of developing the offence and creating game plans on a weekly basis.
He had worked with notable QB’s, including Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, and Derek Carr, prior to joining the Bengals. The development of guys like Joe Burrow, and more recently, Jake Browning, further added to his appeal as a head coaching candidate.
Callahan had completed interviews with several teams with head coaching vacancies. After completing his most recent one in Tennessee, he had others lined up, but it seems as though the Titans won’t let him leave the building.
With Callahan off to Tennessee, the Bengals now have an opening at their offensive coordinator position. The most likely replacement is QB coach Dan Pitcher, who had received a little OC interest earlier in the offseason from around the league. But unless a team is able to lure him away, perhaps with the opportunity to call plays, something he is unlikely to do in Cincinnati, he should be the one to replace Callahan. If not, WR coach Troy Walters could be an option, or they could look for an outside hire.
