The Philadelphia Eagles have signed former Bengals DT Renell Wren.
Wren was a 4th round pick by the Bengals in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was dubbed a raw, but high upside pick at the time. Wren saw action in 11 games as a rookie, but an injury ended his 2020 season before it began.
The lost 2020 season didn’t help his development and, in the meantime, new additions at the position relegated Wren lower down the depth chart. He spent most of 2021 on the practice squad, which is where he ended the season.
As a practice squad member, he became a free agent immediately following the 2021 season. Therefore, he was eligible to sign with another team, unlike pending UFA’s on the roster, who must wait until the new league year begins in mid March to sign with a new team.
In other news, the Bengals have made some additional coaching changes to the ones already announced.
Jordan Kovacs has been promoted to assistant LB coach. Kovacs has been with the Bengals the past three years, with his previous role being the defensive quality control coach.
Derek Frazier, meanwhile, has been added on as an assistant OL coach. He joins Ben Martin in the role.
Frazier previously worked with Frank Pollack in New York with the Jets. He has an extensive history, over 21 years, coaching OL’s, with experience in both the college and professional ranks. Most recently, he was the OL coach at Wyoming.
The Bengals seem to be taking a new approach to the coaching staff, now having two assistant OL coaches. After the OL was a clear weakness in 2021, it does not come as a surprise to see the position already getting extra attention as the offseason begins to unfold.
