The Bengals have made a couple of transactions, signing WR Tyron Johnson and DE Owen Carney to the practice squad.
Johnson was originally signed by the Houston Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2019. Over the past few years, he has spent time with the Jaguars, Chargers, and Raiders, in addition to the Texans, appearing in 26 games. Over that span, he has accumulated 23 receptions for 422 yards and 3 TD’s.
Johnson brings a lot of speed to the table and has shown in both the college and pro ranks that he can take the top off of the defence. He is not a complete player, looking more like a deep ball specialist. However, given the makeup of the Bengals WR room, this is exactly the kind of depth player who could be of use. It will be interesting to see if he gets elevated from the practice squad in future weeks.
Carney is a rookie undrafted free agent out of Illinois. He was originally signed by the Miami Dolphins following the NFL Draft. This move gives the Bengals a little bit more depth along the DL, after Khalid Kareem was recently poached off the practice squad by the Indianapolis Colts.
The two practice squad moves come after a series of workouts were held. In addition to Johnson and Carney, the team kicked the tires on DE Darious Hodge, WR, Lil’Jordan Humphrey, and WR Jaivon Heiligh. As you may remember, Hodge and Heiligh have each spent time with the Bengals in the past.
Of the players released last week, OT Isaiah Prince was signed to the practice squad. That move, along with Johnson and Carney, fills out the practice squad. This means that WR Mike Thomas, at least for the time being, will not be returning, after getting cut last week.
