The Bengals have signed QB Drew Plitt, and have waived CB John Brannon in a corresponding move.
Plitt is an undrafted rookie out of Ball State. In 46 games, he passed for 9062 yards and 68 TD’s. His college film showed an average arm and inconsistent accuracy, but his athleticism and poise in the pocket are both strengths.
He was invited to the Bengals minicamp back in May, and seemingly did enough to keep himself on the team’s radar. Starting QB Joe Burrow recently underwent surgery to remove his appendix. He will miss the start of training camp, and the Bengals needed to add an extra arm to go with Brandon Allen and Jake Browning.
Brannon was originally a 2020 UDFA signing of the Los Angeles Chargers. He was signed by the Bengals to the practice squad, where he remained through their playoff run. Waiving Brannon opened up a spot on the roster for Plitt.
In other news, the Bengals have made some additions to the coaching staff.
Fredi Knighten has been brought on as an offensive assistant. Up to this point, the 28 year old has held down various roles in college football.
This past season, he was on the Utah State University coaching staff as an offensive analyst. Other roles he has had include RB coach for the University of Massachusetts Amherst (2019-2020), with the title of QB coach also being given to him for the 2020 season. He also held down different roles in previous seasons coaching at Maryland and Florida State.
Additionally, the Bengals have added Adam Zimmer to the coaching staff as an offensive assistant.
Zimmer has been coaching in the NFL since 2006. He is the son of former Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, and he coached for the Bengals in 2013. The younger Zimmer had most recently been with the Vikings since 2014. He served as the team’s LB coach, as well as co-defensive coordinator from 2020-2021.
