The Bengals have signed DT Damion Square to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, they have released DT Doug Costin from the practice squad.

Square was originally signed by the Eagles as an undrafted free agent following the 2013 NFL Draft. After the Eagles, he signed with the Chiefs, and then the Chargers, with whom he would spend 7 seasons. He has bounced around the league over the last year, spending time with the Browns, Saints, Bears, and Raiders.

He actually played for the Raiders when they visited Cincinnati to take on the Bengals in the Wildcard round. Because he was only a practice squad elevation for that game, it is possible for him to sign with the Bengals after the Raiders were eliminated. Unlike players on the active roster, whose contracts expire when the new league year begins, practice squad contracts expire quickly. For that reason, you often see teams sign their practice squad guys to reserve/future deals not long after their season ends.

Costin, meanwhile, was only recently added to the practice squad, but didn’t last long. Square is able to play in that 3T role, while Costin is more of a NT. For that reason, the move makes sense from a depth standpoint. They have guys like Reader, Tupou, and Shelvin who can play NT. However, the 3T spot has been thinner since Ogunjobi got hurt.
