In the 3rd round with the 80th overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select WR Jermaine Burton.
Burton is a smooth receiver with the ability to make plays on all three levels of the field. He has good speed to create separation early in his routes, and sustain it on deeper ones. His route running is outstanding. Cuts are precise and his footwork is very deceptive, allowing him to create some extra space for himself. This all allows him to win as a route runner in a variety of ways with a diverse route tree. Burton is a natural hands catcher, extending his arms out from his frame to trap the ball and then tuck it in. He isn’t the tallest guy, but he is capable of going up for. As well, he has shown the ability to make tough catches along the sideline.
Burton was a 1st round prospect, but was available to the Bengals in the 3rd round due character concerns. Some teams reportedly had him off their board. All this stuff will need to be figured out, and hopefully he can do it in Cincinnati.
With Tyler Boyd still a free agent and unlikely to return, Burton figures to replace him in 3 WR sets. He is an outside receiver, but can play in the slot for the time being. This also gives the Bengals some flexibility, should they wish to kick Chase inside for some plays.
This selection also gives the Bengals some flexibility in the Tee Higgins situation. Burton can play as the third guy with Higgins around, and continue to do that if Higgins is extended. But if they choose to trade Higgins or let him walk in a year or two, the Bengals now have someone who can be a direct replacement.
In the 3rd round, with the 97th overall pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select DT McKinnley Jackson.
Jackson projects as a run stuffing NT at the next level. He can stand to be more consistent, but he does a solid job of getting off of blocks and taking up gaps. His pass rush consists of power only, at this point. More rush moves will be needed, some of which could also be used to help him as a run defender. Though he isn’t a twitchy athlete, he is more explosive than I was expecting. Even still, the ceiling is relatively modest, but with development, he can be good in his role.
This pick is a reach on my board – I had a 5th round grade on him. But I see the thinking. The Bengals lost DJ Reader and had been unable to find a replacement, thus far. Jackson is someone who will fill that role, and has the potential to be a good player in that role. His overall upside is modest, but the Bengals will be happy if he can become a consistent run stuffer who is also able to push the pocket.
