Bengals have reportedly re-sign WR Trenton Irwin to a 1 year deal worth up to $2M.
Irwin first joined the Bengals practice squad in 2019, before eventually working his way up to the roster. Over the last couple of years, he has seen his role increase, with him largely handling WR4 duties.
He filled in when Chase, Higgins, and Boyd missed time due to injury at various points over the last couple of seasons. He had some solid moments, showing that he can be a reliable target while making some splash plays every once in a while.
It seems as though he might get an opportunity to replace Boyd as the WR3. But at the same time, he is also likely to face competition for the WR4 spot. Andrei Iosivas flashed last season, and Charlie Jones is likely to get some looks as well.
While Irwin is solid at his job, there are questions about how high he should be on the depth chart. Many will cite the AFC Championship during the 2022 season when he had to fill in for Boyd, but was invisible.
More speed is certainly something the Bengals will look to add at the position. Whether through the draft, free agency, or both, competition will be added. Irwin will have to fend it off, as well as the competition that is already in the building. It should make for an interesting battle.
