The Bengals have re-signed TE Mitchell Wilcox.
This one took a while, but after striking out in free agency and the draft, the Bengals decided to circle back to a familiar face in order to patch up the depth at TE. Following Drew Sample’s injury last year, Wilcox was elevated to the number 2 spot on the depth chart. While he didn’t exactly light the world on fire, he was reliable enough, and good enough on special teams to make a decent impression.
Heading into the 2023 season, Wilcox will be competing with Sample and Devin Asiasi for a spot on the depth chart. Sample goes into camp as the favourite to win it, but this is a battle that should be there for the taking.
If the Bengals go with three on the roster, one of those guys mentioned above will be left out, with Irv Smith currently sitting atop the depth chart. If they wish to keep 4 TE’s, some combination of Smith, Sample, Wilcox, and Asiasi is likely, barring a surprise camp/preseason performance from one of the other TE’s on the roster.
