The Bengals have completed additional transactions to bring back more of their own.
QB Brandon Allen and WR Mike Thomas have been brought back on 1 year deals, while DT Josh Tupou has been given a 2 year deal.
While it wouldn’t be a shock to see some added competition later on, Allen is likely to retain his spot as the top backup to Joe Burrow. While he is definitely not someone who will win you games on his own, he has shown that he can beat lesser teams when the players around him can pick up the slack. This was evident when he sliced through the Texans defence towards the end of the 2020 season.
Thomas played very sparingly on offence, but was one of the team’s better special teamers. He will likely have to compete to retain his spot on the roster, but his special teams ability gives him an inside track for one of the final spots.
Tupou, meanwhile, has been a rotational piece on the DL for a few years now, not counting the 2020 season, which he opted out of. While he doesn’t bring much as a pass rusher, his big frame eats up blocks and he is very solid against the run. He should continue to be an important part of the rotation.
