The Bengals have re-signed DE Cam Sample to a 1 year deal.

Sample was originally a 4th round pick of the Bengals in 2021. Thus far into his career, he has racked up 29 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 tackle for a loss, and 1 pass breakup.

Though never too flashy, he was able to carve out a role for himself as a dependable rotational guy who can play the run and rush the passer a little. As well, he brought inside/outside versatility, which is something the staff liked.

Unfortunately, during training camp, Sample suffered a torn Achilles. Shortly after, he was placed on season ending IR.

Now, Sample will get a chance to bounce back. The Bengals also re-signed Joseph Ossai, but the position still has some question marks. Trey Hendrickson’s status is a huge question mark. Further, the Bengals are yet to make an outside addition at DE. They still might, and it is also likely they add to the position through the draft.

With Myles Murphy still in the mix, as well as Ossai and any potential new addition, Sample will likely be competing for one of the final spots on the depth chart. If he can’t crack the roster, we may see him end up on the practice squad.

The other news from Wednesday was the departure of RB Khalil Herbert, who signed a 1 year deal with the Indianapolis Colts.

Herbert joined the Bengals at the trade deadline when they flipped a 7th round pick to the Chicago Bears to acquire him.

His tenure in Cincinnati started out a bit rocky, as he fumbled the handoff on his first snap. Luckily, it wasn’t a lost fumble. Herbert mostly played sparingly, with Chase Brown getting the bulk of the touches. But in week 18, with Brown out, he did get the start, and fared alright.

With the Bengals, Herbert carried the ball 28 times for 114 yards, while also adding 21 yards on 8 catches.

The writing seemed to be on the wall for Herbert when the Bengals brought back Samaje Perine after a couple of seasons away from the team. As well, Zack Moss is still hanging around, though he still remains a potential cap casualty.
