The Bengals have signed DE Isaiah Thomas off of the practice squad, to the active roster.
Thomas had initially spent the first 6 games of this season on the team’s practice squad. However, he was then poached away by the Detroit Lions, with whom he appeared in 2 games. After being released, he recently signed back to the Bengals practice squad, and was a standard elevation in their week 16 win over the Browns. Now, he earns a promotion to the roster.
In a corresponding move, QB Logan Woodside was waived. He had recently been signed to the active roster off of the practice squad, likely to serve as the emergency 3rd QB after Joe Burrow was a bit dinged up with a knee injury. But as we know, Burrow ended up being fine. Woodside then cleared waivers, and was signed back to the practice squad.
The Bengals also signed DT Domenique Davis to the practice squad.
Davis is another familiar face. He had been on the team’s practice squad in 2022, 2023, and for 6 games this season, before being released. Over that span, he had been elevated for a couple of games when depth was needed at the position. After a brief stint with the Steelers practice squad, he now lands back in Cincinnati.
They weren’t done there, as LB Craig Young has also been added to the practice squad.
Young is a rookie undrafted free agent who initially signed with the Indianapolis Colts. After being waived, he spent some time on the Steelers practice squad, before landing in Cincinnati.
Young’s addition to the practice squad is likely a response to LB Joe Giles-Harris being poached away.
Giles-Harris was signed off of the Bengals practice squad by the Jacksonville Jaguars. As always, teams have the option to block their practice squad players from being poached away by promoting them to their own active roster. But in this case, the Bengals elected not to do so, allowing him to sign with the Jags.
After this string of moves, the Bengals practice squad is full at the 16 man limit.
