The Bengals have placed safety Ricardo Allen on injured reserve.
Allen suffered a broken hand during Sunday’s win against the Vikings. While it is the broken hand that will be keeping him out, he also picked up a strained hamstring in the process. The time off will allow him to get that healed up, as well.
Allen made his Bengals debut on Sunday and turned in a strong performance, contributing 5 tackles. Under the new league rules, players placed on IR are required to miss a minimum of three weeks.
In a corresponding move, the team has signed WR Trenton Irwin off the practice squad.
Irwin made the initial 53 man roster, largely due to a string of impressive performances in camp and the preseason. However, he was later cut to make room for one of the team’s waiver claims.
After spending the first week of the season on the practice squad, Irwin now finds himself back on the roster, and will be looking to take advantage of any opportunity he may get.
With Trenton Irwin signed to the roster, a void was left open on the practice squad. The Bengals filled that void with veteran safety Sean Davis.
Davis is a former 2nd round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers (2016). He was with the team from 2016-2019 before signing for a second stint with them in 2020.
Sean Davis has played in 65 career games to date, racking up 5 interceptions, 244 total tackles, and 2.5 sacks.
In other news, the Bengals have waived CB Donnie Lewis off of IR.
He originally signed with the Bengals practice squad in November of last year, where he remained for the rest of the season. The team re-signed him in the offseason to compete for a depth spot, but an injury landed him a spot on IR.
The injury, however, doesn’t seem to be serious enough for the Bengals to stash him the entire year. Lewis is now free to sign with any team.
