Bengals Place RB Chris Evans & OT D’Ante Smith on IR; Waive DT Devonnsha Maxwell

The Bengals have made a string of roster moves, following their second preseason game.

RB Chris Evans and OT D’Ante Smith have been placed on IR, ending their respective seasons. Both players went down during Thursday’s rainy joint practice with the Chicago Bears. Coincidentally, they both ended up suffering patellar injuries.

Evans was competing with Trayveon Williams for the RB3 spot, and has been a good special teamer over the last few years, while flashing offensively in limited chances. Smith, meanwhile, was competing for the OT4 spot. Both players are in the final year of their contracts, and will hit free agency next year off of a lost season.

The Bengals also waived DT Devonnsha Maxwell. Maxwell was originally signed last year as an undrafted free agent. He ended up spending his rookie season on IR. At the start of this year’s camp, he started out on the active/PUP list. After recently being activated, he appeared in Saturday’s preseason game. However, the Bengals seemingly did not see enough to keep him around.
