The Bengals have officially placed DE Cam Sample on IR. A few practices ago, he went down with an injury and had to be carted off. The other day, it was determined that his Achilles injury would be season ending. This move now makes it official.
With Sample out, and McKinnley Jackson a little banged up, The Bengals brought in a couple of new faces to help out with defensive line depth, ahead of Saturday’s preseason game against the Buccaneers. DE Andre Carter was signed today. He is a rookie undrafted free agent, who had originally signed with the Jaguars, before being waived about a week ago.
DT Joshua Pryor was also signed today. He was originally an undrafted free agent signing of the Commanders last season. Pryor actually appeared in 7 games last season, making 1 special teams tackle during that time.
To help make room, the Bengals waived P Austin McNamara. McNamara figured to have a chance at winning the punting battle, so it is a bit curious to see him cut before the first preseason game. But after Ryan Rehkow was added recently, it seems as though the Bengals preferred what they saw out of him, and will move forward with a Robbins-Rehkow competition. Holding for field goals is something that might have played a part in their decision, in addition to their abilities as punters.
The Bengals also waived WR Tre Mosley. He is a rookie undrafted free agent. They have a lot of depth and competition at the WR position, so it would have been an uphill battle for him to even make the practice squad. Cutting him early gives him more time to latch on somewhere else.
