The Bengals have officially announced their captains for the 2024 season. Captains are chosen as a result of player voting. The following 8 players have been named captains:
QB, Joe Burrow (Offence)
C, Ted Karras (Offence)
OT, Orlando Brown (Offence)
DE, Sam Hubbard (Defence)
S, Vonn Bell (Defence)
LB, Germaine Pratt (Defence)
K, Evan McPherson (Special Teams)
LB, Akeem Davis-Gaither (Special Teams)
This will be Joe Burrow’s 5th season with the Bengals, and he has been voted a captain in all of them. For the first time, he will get to wear the gold captain patch on his jersey, which players receive when they are a captain for 5 years or longer.
Ted Karras is entering his 3rd year with the team, and this will be his 3rd time being named captain. Karras has been one of the team’s biggest leaders, both on and off the field, since his arrival. He is a motivator on the field, and his charity work in the community has gained league wide recognition.
For the first time, Orlando Brown has been named a Bengals captain. With Joe Mixon no longer on the team, a new one was set to be named. Brown is a veteran of the league and is well respected in the room.
Sam Hubbard has been a captain since 2021, and will remain one. He is a holdover from the old Marvin Lewis regime and is the longest tenured current Bengal.
Vonn Bell had been a captain since joining the Bengals in 2020. He left to Carolina last year, but upon his return to Cincinnati, has been voted a captain once again. Bell has been talked up all offseason by coaches for his leadership and ability to communicate on the field.
Germaine Pratt was also named a defensive captain. This one is a bit of a surprise, given that it pushed out Mike Hilton, who had previously been one. But Pratt is a vocal player in the locker room, and seems to be earning more respect as a team leader.
Evan McPherson and Akeem Davis-Gaither are the special teams captains. Both have been given this role for the first time.
In total, the Bengals have 8 captains, with 3 each on offence and defence, as well as 2 on special teams.
