As if losing the game wasn’t enough, the Bengals received some more bad news, following Monday’s loss to the Commanders.
OT Trent Brown went down with a knee injury, and Ian Rapoport has since confirmed that he suffered a torn patellar tendon. The injury will require surgery. Though Brown is expected to make a full recovery, his 2024 season is over, and he will be placed on IR.
Brown signed a 1 year/$4.75M deal in the offseason to become the team’s starting RT. A very cheap price for a starting OT, but his long injury history surely was a big reason for that.
Brown hadn’t lit the world on fire in his first 3 games, but he was having a solid start to his season. Now that he is lost for the season, rookie 1st round pick Amarius Mims is set to fill in.
I don’t expect Mims to be a downgrade from Brown necessarily, but this injury now makes them extremely thin at OT. If Mims or Orlando Brown were to go now, it would now be either Jaxson Kirkland or Cody Ford stepping in. Kirkland had a good preseason, but doesn’t have regular season experience, while Ford has struggled for most of his career.
Once Trent Brown is placed on IR, expect the Bengals to add an OT to the roster. We could see Devin Cochran promoted from the practice squad, or they could look to add a veteran free agent.
