The Bengals have filled out the vacant spots on their offensive coaching staff.
Scott Peters has been brought in as OL coach, replacing Frank Pollack. As well, Michael McCarthy has been hired as assistant OL coach.
Peters is an interesting hire. He spent last season serving as OL coach for the New England Patriots, a unit that was among the worst in the league. However, a lack of talent played a big part of that. Previously, he was assistant OL coach for the Cleveland Browns, where he got to work and learn under Bill Callahan, arguably the best OL coach in the league.
Many have praised Peters as an up and coming coaching talent, and “pass protection technician.” His results in New England last season will cause many to pause, and rightfully so, but there does seem to be some upside to this hiring.
McCarthey was an offensive assistant last season, also with the Patriots. His previous 6 seasons were spent coaching in college, but before that, McCarthey had been in the NFL, holding positions with the Browns and Lions over the span of a few seasons.
With these spots filled out, full attention now turns to the defensive side. Al Golden and Patrick Graham were reported to be the finalists for the defensive coordinator position. Golden is currently coaching Notre Dame in the College Football National Championship as their defensive coordinator. In the coming days, we should get more clarity on who the pick officially is.
