The Bengals have released DT Mike Pennel.

With the Bengals needing some depth at the position, they brought Pennel in back in September, following his release from the Chiefs. The veteran was needed to provide help against the run, with this being a team weakness entering the season.

While the team’s run defence hasn’t been good through 8 games, Pennel’s play has at least been respectable in his rotational role. But this transaction wasn’t made due to his play on the field. Pennel actually requested his release, which the team then granted.

After being cut, Pennel wasted no time resurfacing, making it evident why he asked to be released. It was his old team, the Chiefs, that decided to scoop him back up. With things looking shaky in Cincinnati, it seems as though the 34 year old wanted to maximize his chances of winning, in what might be his last season in the NFL.

As for the Bengals, perhaps they have some other move in the works. There has been speculation about their involvement in the trade market. This also could mean that McKinnley Jackson will get an opportunity. The young NT, up to this point, has only appeared in 1 game this season, spending the rest of it as a healthy scratch.
