On Tuesday, the Bengals waived DE Khalid Kareem, shortly after designating him for return from IR.
He was placed on IR after the initial 53 man roster, allowing for his return. With Cam Taylor-Britt also coming off IR, and a crowded room of depth at DE, this move isn’t the biggest surprise you’ll see, as the roster spots are limited. Some wondered why they would use one of their IR returns on him, but it is clear that the reasoning was to hopefully get him back on the practice squad. Had they released him from IR with an injury settlement, they wouldn’t have had the chance to sign him back.
After being waived, Kareem cleared and has since been signed back to the practice squad. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him elevated as a temporary practice squad call up on occasion. Retaining him as a depth piece is a good thing, as he may come in handy down the line if a few injuries pop up.
