The Bengals have claimed CB Vernon Hargreaves off waivers from the Houston Texans.

Hargreaves was originally a 1st round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016. He has shown flashes of why he was drafted so high, but inconsistent play cost him his job in both Tampa and Houston.

He won’t be high on the depth chart in Cincinnati. However, he does, in theory, have plenty of upside. This is a nice risk/reward pickup for the Bengals.

What is interesting about this pickup is that he was taken 11th overall, only one pick after current Bengals CB Eli Apple. As well, this pickup marks the second higher profile waiver claim at the position since the season started, after they claimed Tre Flowers from the Seahawks earlier on.

In other news, the Bengals have officially activated OT Hakeem Adeniji to the roster. Adeniji has been out since having surgery in the offseason. He was recently designated for return off IR. That opened a three week window in which he could practice without counting towards the roster limit. After being activated, he will now be part of the 53 man roster.

In corresponding moves, the Bengals have waived DE Darius Hodge and CB Nick McCloud.

Hodge was signed as an UDFA this year. He had an outstanding preseason, leading to him earning an opening day roster spot. However, he hasn’t received much playing time, instead finding himself buried on the depth chart. It is likely that he resurfaces on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

McCloud, meanwhile, is also a rookie UDFA. He was claimed by the Bengals following final cuts, but has only appeared in one game since.
