There is not a lot going on at the top of the Bengals LB depth chart. Logan Wilson and Germaine Pratt, one of the league’s better duos, are locked into their starting spots. Wilson will wear the headset, and both will be important parts of the defence.
Barring a horrible dropoff, Akeem Davis-Gaither is probably locked in as the third guy. The Bengals were able to re-sign him during the offseason, and are lucky to have him back. I could have seen him chasing a bigger role. But now, he is likely first off the Bengals, and his ability to cover, play the run, and play on special teams makes him a valuable depth piece.
Joe Bachie is the favourite for the fourth spot. He isn’t flashy, but overall is pretty reliable. Coverage isn’t necessarily his strong suit, but his instincts are great, and he plays the run well. Also, he is a core special teamer.
I do think Shaka Heyward has an outside shot to jump Bachie on the depth chart. He has a great skill set. Size, athleticism, ability to play in coverage and against the run. Physically, he can do it all. The mental side of his game was what needed the most work. If he hasn’t progressed enough, Bachie likely gets the job. But if Heyward puts on a good display, he could go and grab it.
Devin Harper was claimed off waivers by the Bengals in September of last year. He appeared in 6 games for the team as a special teamer. He might not have the upside on defence that someone like Hayward has. However, he is someone who the Bengals seem to trust on special teams. This will allow him to factor into the roster battle, even if he isn’t as impactful on defence. A practice squad spot is also possible.
Aaron Casey and Maema Njongmeta, both rookie undrafted free agents, round things out here. Both have a lot of similarities. They are hard hitters and aggressive players, but lack the athleticism to cover or to play the outside run effectively. A good offseason for either one might put them in the conversation for a practice squad spot, but I don’t see either seriously challenging for a roster spot.
