Bengals 2023 Roster Breakdown: QB

Bengals Roster Breakdown: QB

Players:

9. Joe Burrow

19. Trevor Siemian

6. Jake Browning

Training camp is less than a month away, and we now begin to look at some of the roster battles that will be taking place. We start with the QB position, though, as we have seen for probably most of the last two decades, there isn’t a lot going on here.

Needless to say, Joe Burrow goes into the season as the unquestioned starter. He has played at an elite level since entering the league as the 1st overall pick in 2020. The Bengals will be counting on him to help lead the team deep in the playoffs once again, but hopefully with a better ending than we have seen in the past 2 years.

Brandon Allen served as Burrow’s backup for roughly the past 2 and a half seasons, but is now a member of the San Francisco 49ers. Shortly after his departure, the Bengals added another veteran to replace Allen; Trevor Siemian. Siemian is best known for his days as the Broncos starter, which began following their victory in Super Bowl 50. He has since bounced around, spending time with teams like the Jets, Saints, and Bears. Though he won’t wow you with athleticism or arm strength, Siemian is accurate enough when given time, and he is someone that coaches seem to trust to manage a game. Going into camp, he is the favourite to win the backup job.

Siemian’s only competition for the backup job, at least at the moment, is Jake Browning. Browning was originally a mid round pick of the Vikings, and spent last season on the Bengals practice squad. Though he didn’t inspire a ton of confidence through his time with the Vikings, Browning had a surprisingly solid preseason last year. Though he is a clear underdog in the battle with Siemian, building on his performances last year would certainly make things interesting.
