After the defence got the upper hand through the first 8 training camp practices, the Bengals took the field for 3 more, with the offence looking to improve. Important battles continue to take place throughout the roster. These practices also are the final ones before the team’s preseason opener against the Cardinals. Let’s see what went down.
The DB vs WR battle has been intense. Ja’Marr Chase continues to shine, but Chidobe Awuzie has had his share of wins as well. Eli Apple has especially been the victim of some Chase highlights, including a one handed catch down the sideline on day 11. However, those don’t tell the whole story. Apple reportedly went 4-5 in coverage against Chase on that day, with the lone loss being on Chase’s one handed catch.
UDFA wideouts Kendric Pryor and Kwamie Lassiter continue to stand out in camp. With depth being thin behind the top 3, both are certainly in the mix for a roster spot. The preseason will be the next step for each of them.
The DL continues to get the better of the OL. Trey Hendrickson specifically has been outstanding. This battle should be closer once some of the starters return. La’el Collins got some work in for the first time on day 11. Having him back will be big. The bright spot for the OL continues to be Jonah Williams, who has been drawing rave reviews.
While the defence has largely bested the offence thus far, the offence looked much better on day 11. Brandon Allen reportedly went 11-18, leading 3 long drives. Mike Thomas also had a solid day, making a few catches, including one for a TD.
At safety, Michael Thomas has been a mainstay with the 2’s. This, as well as being a core special teamer and leader in the room, puts him ahead of the competition, for the moment. Guys like Treyvon Henderson, Brandon Wilson, and the young rookies will have to put together a good preseason. Wilson missing time due to injury also doesn’t help his case in the KR battle, as guys like Chris Evans and Pooka Williams are getting more opportunities to grab the spot.
Evan McPherson has continued his near perfect camp. Over the course of training camp, he has attempted around 35 or so kicks, missing only one or two. Several have been from long range, including his successful 65 yarder.
The punter battle continues to be close, as youngster Drue Chrisman has overcome some early hiccups and put together some impressive reps. Huber has reportedly been good to, but seemingly hasn’t been as flashy as Chrisman.
The team’s next action will be their preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Training camp will resume in the days following.
