Cincinnati Bengals 2022 Position Overview: QB
Players:
9. Joe Burrow
8. Brandon Allen
6. Jake Browning
With training camp just about a month away, it is time to look at some of the battles that will be taking place. As I did last year, I will be going position by position, going over how things might shake up, both on the roster and on the practice squad.
We start with the QB position. This will likely be one of the blander positions to cover, in terms of offseason battles, as we pretty much know where everyone stands. Joe Burrow, needless to say, is the unquestioned starter. After a promising rookie season, he took another step forward in 2021, helping lead the Bengals to an appearance in the Super Bowl. Big things will be expected of him once again. As hard as it would be to top the season he had, the health of his knee seems to be better now. It looks as though he will be ditching the brace, and his mobility looks great early in the offseason.
Brandon Allen seems locked into his spot as the primary backup, a position he has held roughly for the past year and a half. While he didn’t perform great in his start in the season finale against the Browns, he showed towards the end of the 2020 season that he is capable of winning games. His great performance against the Texans that year highlights what he is capable of. While he is not the flashiest player, having a backup QB that you at least have a chance with is all you can ask for.
The real uncertainty at this position begins after Burrow and Allen. Jake Browning is currently the only other QB on the roster. Unless he really impresses, I don’t see the Bengals keeping 3 QB’s on the roster. In all likelihood, he will be vying for a spot on the practice squad. The QB was originally signed as a UDFA by the Vikings in 2019. Browning doesn’t have a great arm or measurables, and was a bit underwhelming in college. He will likely need to have a good preseason in order to cement his spot. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Bengals bring in someone else with more upside after final cuts.
