The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Bengals QB Brandon Allen.
Allen first joined the Bengals prior to the 2020 season. He spent the first part of it in the practice squad, behind Joe Burrow and Ryan Finley. Following Burrow’s injury, he jumped Finley on the depth chart, and ended up seeing extensive playing time as the number 2.
Allen was ordinary for the most part, though by that time, the injuries the team had piled up didn’t make things any easier. He did, however, turn in an outstanding performance against the Texans late in the year, out dueling Deshaun Watson, and picking up the win. Allen showed that, at the very least, he could provide serviceable play when the team around him can pick things up.
Brandon Allen ended up serving as the primary backup for the next two seasons, making a small handful of garbage time appearances and 1 start, made against the Browns in 2021, with the Bengals resting their starters.
With Allen moving on, the Bengals will officially have a new backup next season. Jake Browning is a holdover from last year’s team. He spent most of the year on the practice squad. The Bengals also have some options in free agency that would be suitable.
