Not long after the conclusion of the NFLPA Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game, the Senior Bowl took place. Like the other two games, its purpose is for NFL Draft prospects to get a chance to showcase their talents for NFL scouts one last time. However, this game typically features prospects who are more highly touted, and well known going into the draft. Senior Bowl week featured three practices, in addition to the game on Saturday. Listed below are some of the participants that caught my eye in the practices and/or in the game.
- WR, Nathaniel Dell
Dell was among the biggest standouts over the course of the week. Whether it was the one on one drills or team drills, he was consistently creating separation. His route running looked precise, and the speed and quickness that he possesses were on full display.
- CB, Darius Rush
Not all the CB’s turned in their best work, but Rush was one of the better, more consistent ones throughout the week. His ability to anticipate plays looked really good. At times, it seemed as though he was the one running the route. He did well to get his head turned at the right time, and it resulted in some pass breakups.
- DE, Will McDonald
There was a lot of edge talent at this year’s Senior Bowl, and there were some good battles in the trenches. One of the standouts at the position was McDonald. He showed off a wicked spin move and some nice bend. He is a good athlete, who can do some damage coming off the edge.
- TE, Luke Musgrave
Musgrave showed nice traits at the Senior Bowl. The size and length that he possesses is evident from the jump. He showed this week that his athleticism is also an asset, and that he has the potential to be a serious downfield threat in the NFL.
- OT, Cody Mauch
Mauch had some good and bad moments, but for the small school prospect, there were a lot more good ones. He looks like a solid enough athlete, and his anchor ability was also pretty solid for much of this week. Mauch’s position versatility was on full display, as the coaches had him lined up at each spot, over the course of the event. He didn’t look out of place at any of them. Some will likely project him inside, while others may be fine leaving him on the outside. The versatility he showed this week certainly will help maximize his suitors, come draft day.
- OT, Dawand Jones
Jones only got into one practice, but he made it count. He was dominant for the most part, using his massive frame and great strength to stifle anyone that tried to get by. Going up against this kind of talent adds to the magnitude of his performance, and it could have him shooting up big boards.
- TE, Payne Durham
Durham was another TE to turn some heads. For him, it was his body control that was the most impressive. His ability to rotate in the air and still secure and hang onto the ball was impressive. Durham’s hands looked great at the Senior Bowl, and he looks like someone who can be a nice option for a team in need of a good pass catching TE.
- RB, Tyjae Spears
Spears was somewhat lesser known entering the week, but he quickly made a name for himself. His speed and burst were consistently shown throughout the week. He is someone who can both run and catch the ball. As well, his work in pass protection did not go unnoticed.
- OT, Darnell Wright
Wright was impressive in the practice, and further carried it over to the game. His strength looked very good throughout the week, Wright showed a good anchor ability and at times, it looked like he was just bullying guys on the field.
- WR, Tre Tucker
Tucker is undersized, but he will still have his fair share in interest. Why? One word… speed. He was blazing by people all week, and it translated into catches deep down the field. Tucker is someone who can make plays with the ball in his hands.
- C, Steve Avila
Avila put some impressive reps on tape this week. He is a strong player, and his ability to anchor down on many plays was quite intriguing. As well, his C/G versatility should give his draft stock a boost.
